  • New Zealand's 318 for 4 is their highest first-day total against England after being asked to bat. Their previous highest was 306 for 8 at Christchurch in 1946-47. The partnership of 236 between Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell is New Zealand's highest for the fifth wicket against any country, beating the 222-run stand between Nathan Astle and Craig McMillan against Zimbabwe at Wellington in 2000-01.
  • The Mitchell and Blundell partnership is New Zealand's highest for the fifth wicket in the first innings of a Test after they had been inserted. The previous highest was 190 between Mark Richardson and Craig McMillan against Bangladesh at Hamilton in 2001-02.
  • New Zealand's 553 is their highest total against England after being inserted. Their previous best was 443 at Auckland in 2012-13. Their highest in the same circumstances against all opposition is 630 for 6 against India at Mohali in 2003-04.
  • New Zealand's total is the seventh highest by any country in England after being inserted. The highest is England's 653 for 4 against India at Lord's in 1990.
  • New Zealand's total is the second highest conceded in the first innings of a Test by England after inserting the opposition. The highest is Australia's 601 for 7 at Headingley in 1989.
  • Blundell is the first New Zealand wicket-keeper to score a Test century in England.
  • Blundell is the third New Zealand after B-J. Watling and Brendon McCullum to score a century and make six or more dismissals in the same Test. For all countries, there have been 23 such instances but Blundell is only the second wicket-keeper (after Adam Gilchrist against England at Sydney in 2002-03) to do so in a losing team.
  • Blundell became the first non-England wicket-keeper to score a Test century at Trent Bridge. Alan Knott and Matt Prior are the only wicket-keepers to perform the feat.
  • New Zealand's 553 is the highest first innings total after being inserted at Trent Bridge, surpassing the 428 for 5 dec by England against Pakistan in 1962.
  • Ben Foakes became the ninth England wicket-keeper to concede one (or fewer) bye(s) in a Test innings exceeding 550 runs. Alan Knott, Alec Stewart (both three times) and Jack Russell(twice) all achieved the feat more than once whilst the highest score conceded by England without one bye is 659 against Australia at Sydney in 1946-47 when Godfrey Evans was wicket-keeper.
  • Foakes became the sixth England wicket-keeper to score a fifty and make six or more dismissals in a Test.
  • Michael Bracewell became the first New Zealand player to fall for 49 in his Test debut innings.
  • Daryl Mitchell's 190 is New Zealand's highest score at Trent Bridge surpassing Bevan Congdon's 176 in 1973.
  • The New Zealand innings saw the fourth time between the two countries that New Zealand lost all ten wickets to catches.
  • New Zealand's total is the highest of all completed innings where all ten wickets fell to catches. The previous highest was 486 by West Indies against India at Bridgetown in 1982-83.

  • Joe Root became the seventh England player to score four Test centuries against New Zealand. He joins Alec Stewart, David Gower, Graham Thorpe, Wally Hammond, Graham Gooch and Michael Atherton.
  • Root also became the most prolific England player against New Zealand surpassing Graham Gooch's record (1148 runs in 24 innings, average 52.18).
  • Mitchell became the seventh New Zealand player to score 150 in one innings and 50 in the other innings of the same Test. His aggregate of 252 runs is the joint fourth highest with Stephen Fleming's 343 (274* and 69*) against Sri Lanka at Colombo (PSS) in 2002-03 topping the list.
  • Mitchell's 700 minutes of batting during the Test is the tenth longest for New Zealand. The longest is Stephen Fleming's 950 minutes against Sri Lanka at Colombo (PSS) in 2002-03.
  • Trent Boult became the record-scoring No.11 in Test history, overtaking Muttiah Muralitharan's 623 in 98 innings. Boult has batted 79 times to overtake Muralitharan.
  • New Zealand's first innings 553 is their highest first innings of a Test in which they have lost. Their previous highest was 433 against Australia at Christchurch in 2004-05. Test cricket's highest first innings of a match total in which the batting side lost is 595 for 8 by Bangladesh against New Zealand at Wellington in 2016-17. New Zealand's total is the fourth highest.
  • The 1675 runs scored in the Test is a record at Trent Bridge. The previous highest was 1496 between England and Australia in 1938.
  • In successfully achieving their victory target, England also made the highest successful fourth-innings chase at Trent Bridge which was previously their 284 for 6, also against New Zealand, in 2004.
  • Jonny Bairstow's 136 is only the second, fourth innings century by an England player in a successful chase at Trent Bridge. Graham Thorpe made an unbeaten 104, also against New Zealand in 2004.
  • Bairstow's innings, despite just missing out on being the quickest century by an England player, is the third highest for England in the fourth innings in a winning side. Mark Butcher's unbeaten 173 against Australia at Headingley in 2001 heads the list.
  • The seven sixes hit by Bairstow in his innings is the most by a player at Trent Bridge. Viv Richards (West Indies vs. England in 1976) and Umar Gul (Pakistan vs. England in 2010) hit four each which is the next best, as did Mitchell and Stokes in this same Test.
  • Ben Stokes's second innings, unbeaten 75 is the joint-seventh, fourth innings highest score by an England captain in a winning side. The highest is Michael Atherton's 118 against New Zealand at Christchurch in 1996-97 whilst the highest by any captain at Trent Bridge is Mike Brearley's 81 against Australia in 1977.
  • The twelve sixes hit in England's second innings is the most for one innings in a Test in England. Previously, ten were hit by England against Australia at Edgbaston in 2005 and New Zealand also hit ten against England at Old Trafford in 1999.
  • The 179-run partnership between Bairstow and Stokes is a record for the fifth wicket in England in the fourth innings of a Test. This beat the 177 between Bevan Congdon and Vic Pollard for New Zealand against England, also at Trent Bridge, in 1973.
  • There were seventeen occasions of bowlers conceding 50 or more runs in an innings during the Test, a record for any Test. The previous highest was 14 between West Indies and Australia at Bridgetown in 1954-55.
