England VS. New Zealand Second Test Highlights, The Oval

  • England gave a debut to three players for the first time since the South African Test, also at The Oval, in 2017.
  • The last time that New Zealand played a Test at The Oval was in 1999.
  • The last occasion that an England team saw five changes from the preceding Test and during the same series was against Australia at Hobart in 2021-22. The last time that there were more than five changes using the same criteria was against West Indies at Manchester in 1995 (6).
  • Glenn Phillips became only the second New Zealand player to score a century against England at The Oval. John Wright scored 119 in 1986. Henry Nicholls became the third in the second innings and his 121 is therefore New Zealand's top individual score on the ground.
  • The 31 byes conceded by James Rew in the match is the most by an England wicket-keeper on debut surpassing the 26 by George Brown at Headingley against Australia in 1921.
  • The 53 extras in New Zealand's first innings is the joint-twelfth highest by an England team. Their highest is 74 against West Indies at Port-of-Spain in 2008-09.
  • The last occasion that an England side conceded 53 or more extras in one innings was also against New Zealand, at Mount Maunganui, in 2019-20.
  • The partnership of 87 between Phillips and Kyle Jamieson is New Zealand's fifth highest for the eighth wicket against England. It is their second highest in England with their best being 104 between Denis Moloney and Albert Roberts at Lord's in 1937
  • Daryl Mitchell became the ninth New Zealand player to register 1000 Test runs against England. Tom Blundell needs 28 and Tom Latham 66 to reach 1000 against England.
  • The 53-run partnership between Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker is England's fourth 50 partnership for the tenth wicket against New Zealand, and the third highest. The highest is 59 between Alan Knott and Norman Gifford at Trent Bridge in 1973. There have been 60 last-wicket partnerships of 50 or more for England whilst this was the fourteenth at The Oval (between all teams).
  • The partnership of 161 between Henry Nicholls and Rachin Ravindra is the fifth highest for the third wicket for New Zealand against England (of which four have been in England). Their record is the unbeaten 213 between Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor at Hamilton in 2019-20.
  • Matt Henry's match analysis of 11-109 is the best bowling match for New Zealand against England in a Test surpassing Dion Nash's 11 for 169 at Lord's in 1994.
  • The last player to take five or more wickets in both innings of the same Test at The Oval was Shane Warne for Australia against England in 2005.
  • England's second innings saw their third occasion where their numbers 8, 9, 10 and 11 all failed to score a run in the same innings. The previous occasions were both against Australia, at Melbourne in 1994-95 and at Lord's in 2005.
  • Joe Root became the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to score 14,000 Test runs.
  • As well as chasing down Tendulkar's record 15,921 Test runs, Root has now top-scored in an innings on 75 occasions which is just three behind Tendulkar's further record of 78.
  • Root also became the first player to score 2000 Test runs against New Zealand. The previous highest was Javed Miandad (1919). Root also leads the way with sixteen 50+ scores against New Zealand.
  • The only other occasion that New Zealand scored 350 or more in both innings of the same Test against England was at Headingley in 2015.
  • England's second innings saw four ducks. This has happened to them on forty-eight occasions in Tests but this is the fifth time against New Zealand. Their last such occasion against New Zealand was at Lord's in 2021.
  • For their fourth time, England scored exactly 500 runs in a match. The other occasions were against Australia at Adelaide in 1950-51, against India at Lord's in 1982 and against India at The Oval in 2021.
  • New Zealand's 253-run victory is their highest by runs against England in England beating their 199-run win at Headingley in 2015.
